Ghostbed Review – A Freaky Good Mattress!

Ghostbed Review

The Ghostbed is the result of too many people not sleeping well (including the founder), and 35 years of mattress industry knowledge.

The Ghostbed is made by Nature’s Sleep – a successful mattress company that’s been around since 2001.

It took over 15 years of research to develop the Ghostbed.

There’s a fine line between support and comfort.

Design must be almost perfect within a mattress to be able to walk on that wire.

We talked about this a little bit here in our Purple Mattress Review.

Ghostbed hit the nail on the head with two things with their mattress.

  • Keeping You Cool
  • Achieving A Balance Of Firm & Soft

What sticks out the most between those two is sleeping cool.

We talk about this in more detail below, but this is at the core of Ghostbed’s proprietary materials and construction – which allows your body to stay cool and stay asleep longer.

  • Length: 75” (6 feet 1 inch)
  • Width: 54” (4 feet 6 inches)
  • Height: 11 inches
  • Length: 80” (6 feet 6 inches)
  • Width: 60” (5 feet)
  • Height: 11 inches
  • Length: 80” (6 feet 8 inches)
  • Width: 76” (6 feet 4 inches)
  • Height: 11 inches

Ghostbed Features

  • Sleeps Cool

Sleeping cool is the center of attention for the Ghostbed.

Their value pitch completely revolves around temperature regulation, and how it affects your body’s restoration through a great night’s sleep.

You’ll find Continuous Motion Activated Cooling within the top aerated latex layer, and you’ll also find cooling gel infused memory foam.

  • Performance + Comfort

Like we mentioned above – finding the balance of performance and comfort is the ultimate goal for any mattress company.  Sway too far into either spectrum and you’ll find a big portion of your customer base complaining – every body, and every sleep style is different.

When we look at performance and comfort that consists of 2 different spectrums.  You have..

  • Hot & Cold
  • Soft & Firm

Overall, the Ghostbed did great in both areas.  Let’s look a little deeper.

Ghostbed Layers

ghostbed mattress layers

The biggest difference in the Ghostbed in comparison to other foam mattresses is the amount of importance they place on keeping you cool.  You’ll see how important that is within the first two layers (beneath the cover).

On top of that, this mattress is also 11 inches thick compared to most foam mattresses which are around 10 inches.  This provides ample comfort and support.

The Ghostbed is the only mattress on the market that puts an aerated latex on top of a gel infused memory foam layer.  This is part Ghostbed’s patent pending Cool Burst Technology.

ghostbed cover features

The cover is a 100% polyester.  It’s stretchy, but responds right back to its original shape to make sure you’re not laying on any ‘cover slack’.   The sides however are a blend of polyester (51%) & polypropolyne (49%).

Why are the sides a different material blend?

This gives the side some extra support that will be helpful to you if you snag the Ghostbed on a corner when moving, or when trying to tug that extra tight fitted sheet over the corners.

ghostbed top layer

The top layer is 1.5 inches synthetic aerated rubber latex.  Latex is typically more responsive than memory foam which gives you a nice feel.

Think of rolling over in the middle of the night.  On a typical memory foam mattress, the depressed mattress you were once laying on can take a bit to contour to your new position.

With latex you will see a much faster response time.

The aeration holes keep your body continuously cool throughout the night.

ghostbed gel infused memory foam

When you combine the 1.5 inch latex top layer with the middle layer you get an even cooler sleeping experience.

This middle layer is a moderate 2 inches of gel memory foam.

Gel memory foam sleeps cooler than regular memory foam.

The gel that is infused creates a passageway for air to escape – rather than keeping you hot and sweaty.

Keep in mind that the top layer is only 1.5 inches.  So if you’re heavy enough to compress the top layer down to nothing (most people will be) your body will also be touching this middle layer – which is why the cooling properties of the middle layer are just as important as the top.

Another point worth mentioning is the 2 inch thickness.  That may seem thin?  We discovered a great reason for this.

If the middle section was any thicker than that it would cause your body to get capsized by the memory foam on either side.  When you sink deeper into a memory foam mattress it can cause your body to become hot.

Keeping this layer thin can only benefit not only your comfort, but your overall body temperature throughout the night.

Gel memory foam is a temperature sensitive material.

Very warm or humid weather may make the mattress feel extra soft, while colder weather can make the mattress feel firmer than intended.

The ideal temperature range that you should keep the Ghostbed at is 65-75 degrees farenheit.

ghostbed high density foam

This bottom layer is high density memory foam.  Luckily this layer is dense foam – otherwise you would sink further into the mattress than you need to – resulting in a higher body temperature.

This layer only acts as a foundation for the entire bed and provides height to the Ghost mattress.

How soft is the Ghostbed?

The Ghostbed is soft to the touch, but will still give you enough support around your hips and shoulders to keep you aligned well.

Like we mentioned above – the cover is made of 100% polyester so may be cool to the touch – but not cold.

When you first lay on the Ghostbed after unboxing it will feel more like a 7-7.5 on the firmness scale, but after the mattress completely decompresses it will feel more like a 6 on the firmness scale.

Ghostbed states that it will take anywhere for a few hours to an entire day to fully decompress – and in winter months?  It could be as much as 5 days for you to see the full benefits in your mattress.

We’ve found that this IS the perfect combination for those who like firm, or soft.

The Ghostbed is firm enough for those that like a firm mattress, and soft enough for those that like to sink into their mattress some.

Unlike the Purple Mattress that we reviewed here – The Ghostbed is one that you will have to ‘rotate’ every 6 months or so.

We didn’t say ‘flip’ the mattress.  The bottom layer isn’t the top as you saw above.

You still want that first layer to be aerated latex foam to keep your body cool.  Because we tend to have more concentrated weight up top where our torsos are it’s best to rotate it 180 degrees.

Doing this will increase mattress longevity.

What about edge support?

This is a common concern for most people buying a mattress and with the Ghostbed the edge support isn’t by any means great.

Why though?

If you want stronger edge support we recommend getting a wider mattress, or a firmer one – but consider what that would do to your sleep.

The Ghostbed has a balanced feel of firm and soft so if it had astounding edge support it would lean more towards the firm side of the scale.

What’s the responsiveness like?

If you press your hand down with some weight into the Ghostbed and remove it you will see almost immediate response and a lot of ‘bounce’.  That’s just the 1.5 inches of aerated latex working for you.  Latex is typically more responsive than memory foam.

But if you lie down on the Ghostbed you will see more of a slow response.  Why?

Your body weight is starting to get to the gel memory foam layer (the middle layer) which has a slower response than the top layer.

Responsiveness will completely depend on your body weight.  If you’re under 150 pounds you will see more responsiveness because you’re only working that top layer.  If you’re over 150 pounds you will see less responsiveness and more sinkage into the mattress.

Ghostbed Pros & Cons List

  • Sleeps cooler than most mattresses
  • Great balance of firm and soft (great for dual preferences)
  • A better value than some other online mattress companies
  • Provides great contour to your body from the middle layer without feeling caved in
  • The top layer has great response – perfect for rolling over in the night
  • This mattress isn’t for you if you like sleeping on a soft mattress only. This mattress is in between soft and firm, but a little more towards the firm side for support through the night.

The Ghostbed Trial Period

Ghostbed comes with 101 sleep night trial so you can test the mattress right from the comfort of your home.

Their 101 sleep night trial only applies if you buy through GhostBed directly.

If you buy through amazon here – then Amazon will accept a return as well if you don’t like your mattress.

Please note that if you purchase a Ghostbed through Amazon you won’t get the full 10 sleep nights.  You will be elligbible to return the mattress if it falls within 30 days of initial purchase.

Ghostbed Warranty Period

The Ghostbed comes with a 20 year warranty. That’s longer than any other warranty we’ve seen out there for online mattresses.

For the first 10 years the warranty covers..

  • Any visible or lasting indentation (body impression) greater than one inch not associated from a sag in the foundation, box springs, or platform (mattress support).
  • Any physical flaw in the mattress causing the latex or memory foam material to split or crack, despite normal usage and proper handling.

After those 10 years the warranty is prorated.  If you’re over 10 years on the Ghostbed Warranty, but underneath the 11th year then Ghostbed will replace your mattress for 50% of the original purchase price.

If you’re over 11 years, but still beneath that 20 year mark they will increase the prorated price 5% – making it 55% of the original purchase price for you to replace it.

The prorated portion of the Ghostbed warranty is completely up to them so keep that in mind too that they can’t be held responsible for replacing your mattress if something happens to it a decade from now.

 Ghostbed Review Summary

Overall, the Ghostbed is one of the best online mattresses you can sleep on.

We personally like this mattress a lot, but it isn’t for everyone.  The Ghostbed is for people who want:

  • Sleep Cool – One of the core values behind the Ghost Mattress is the temperature regulation that it offers.  The aerated latex keeps you cool on the surface while the gel memory foam layer provides that extra coolness you need to stay asleep.
  • Prefer A Firmer Mattress – Providing support and comfort is a tough balance to touch.  With great comfort, you also need a slightly firmer mattress to keep your spine aligned to relieve the pressure of the day off your body.
  • Want A Responsive, Yet Contouring Mattress – The combination of the top layer and middle layer is what makes the Ghostbed a great selling online mattress.  The thin 1.5 inch responsive layer bounces back with every move while the middle layer allows the mattress to contour to your body.
