The Ultimate Leesa Mattress Review

Leesa Mattress Review

Some consider the Leesa mattress to be the best online mattress on the market today.

If you’ve tried out other online mattress options with no luck then the Leesa may be a good pick.  It’s always important to consider what type of preferences you have, and what type of sleeper you are.

  • Made of high quality materials
  • Unique avena foam top layer to keep you cool
  • Comtouring middle and bottom layers
  • 12,000+ 5 star reviews

Here is a quick rundown of the Leesa Mattress Review if you don’t have time to read:

  • Leesa Mattress Rating:

At the time of posting the Leesa Mattress has an average review rating of 4 out of 5 stars for roughly 863 reviews on Amazon.  And on their website?  This mattress has over 12,700 reviews with an average of 5 stars.

  • Why the Leesa Mattress is different?

Out of the bigger online mattress companies present, there isn’t another one that is combining an avena foam top layer with a memory foam middle layer.  Doing this creates a unique sleeping experience as the top layer is great for bounce and support, and the layer underneath slowly contours your body throughout the night.  If you normally sleep hot, or your bed is firm then this could be a great option for you.

  • One thing you may not know about Leesa?

Leesa is a great company to buy a mattress from if you can’t decide between different options you’ve been ‘chewing on’.

First off, they give grant every buyer a 100-night sleep trial (yes, even if you purchase on Amazon).

Additionally, for every 10 mattresses that Leesa sells, they donate 1 to homeless shelters and those in need.  They strongly believe in giving back to the community so your money is going towards helping someone else get a great night sleep.

Leesa Mattress Layers

The Leesa Mattress combines 2 types of material to give you a great balance of support and comfort when you lie down.

Memory foam has been on the mattress market since the early 90’s, but tends to get too hot if your entire mattress is made up of the material.

Companies started to realize this within the past few years to start combining other materials to the memory foam to give it cooling properties.

For the Leesa Mattress that means combining it with Avena Foam.

Here is a quick breakdown of the Leesa Mattress Layers:

Cover

The cover on the Leesa Mattress is made of a polyester / lycra blend.

You may not be familiar with either one of these materials just by name.

You can typically find both in athletic type wear, or your average ‘dri-fit’ casual athletic shirt.

Lycra is also another name for spandex or elastane, and is known for it’s stretchy properties.

Sometimes you can find polyester blended with cotton shirts to prevent shrinkage as 100% cotton shrinks easily.

But that’s not the most important here.

In terms of softness?

The cover has a nice soft feel to it and is a great testament to the quality and care that Leesa puts into their mattresses.

After all, you won’t be seeing it much after you put your fitted sheet on the mattress.

Top Layer

If you’re read any other mattress review online you may have started to pick up on a pattern.

Most mattresses are completely different on the top layer.

Even though the top layer is typically only 1.5 – 3 inches – it’s by far the most critical component to the mattress, and could mean the difference in a ‘okay’ night’s sleep, and slumber.

For the Leesa Mattress, the differentiating top layer is made of avena foam.

Avena is actually a polyurethane foam (just your standard memory foam), but acts like a latex foam because of great bounce that the foam provides.

Most importantly, the top layer of the mattress needs to keep you cool.  The Leesa mattress does this by providing aeration throughout the top layer to promote airflow.

Something else worth mentioning is the structure of the avena foam.

If you can see in the above picture the layer looks like an upside-down egg crate.  This is a plus because if the layer was flat on both the top and bottom it wouldn’t breathe as easily.

Having the material cuts this way ensures that when you move, the airflow that’s present between the top and bottom later will push through another hole to keep you cool.

Middle Layer

Another unique part of the Leesa Mattress is the density difference in the top layer, and middle layer of the mattress.

Some mattresses will construct the top layer to be less dense and allow for more ‘give’ to your body weight, but the Leesa is just the opposite – and there is a good reason for this.

The top layer is dense enough to not completely compress so that air will still flow between the top and middle layer while providing great bounce, and the middle layer is less dense to slowly conform and hug your body while sleeping.

The middle layer is 2 inches as well.  Any more than that and the Leesa would most likely make you sink too much into the mattress.

Bottom Layer

The bottom layer is made of memory foam that is denser than the middle layer.

It’s 6 inches in height and not only provides comfort and support to the above layers and your body, but it also provides the additional height needed to make this a respectable size mattress.

All in all, the Leesa Mattress is 10 inches in height.  If you’re currently using an 11 or 12 inch mattress you should consider this when it comes to the slack in your sheets if you decide to switch, and also the height of your nightstands, lamps, or other bedside items.

How Soft or Firm is the Leesa?

The Leesa is a pretty happy medium between firm and soft.

This is largely due to the top layer providing enough bounce while the middle layer contours to your body.

On our SleepRated scale – the Leesa Mattress was right around a 6 (10 being the most firm).

Keep in mind if you like more of a firm mattress this one may not be for you.

Why is Leesa great? (aside from their mattress)

Leesa donates 1 mattress to those in need for every 10 that they sell.

If you do the math – for every 100,000 that they sell that’s 10,000 mattresses!

That’s nothing short of incredible, and is part of what the company is built off – giving back to the community.

Just another plus if you find that this is the mattress you end up moving forward with knowing that your money isn’t just going to the profits of the company, but it’s also helping someone else get a good night’s sleep.

Leesa Mattress Pros & Cons List

PROS
  • Sleeps Cool.
  • Provides a feel that is unique compares to other mattresses (the top avena layer is cool and provides a lot of bounce while the middle layer is denser and slowly conforms to your body).
  • High quality materials that won’t wear out on you.
  • Leesa donates some of your money to those in need.
  • 100 night sleep trial.
  • Soft, yet supportive.
  • Great for the average sleeper.
CONS
  • More on the soft side of ‘happy medium’ mattresses. Not a good choice if you like a firm mattress.
  • Only 10” compared to some other 11 or 12” mattresses (take height into account).
  • If you weigh under 130 pounds this mattress may not ‘hug’ your body as much as you’d like. The middle layer needs a certain amount of weight per cubic foot to depress.

Leesa Mattress Trial Period & Warranty

Like we mentioned above, Leesa gives you 100 nights to sleep on their mattress before deciding if you want to keep it or not.

Leesa also works with their Amazon buddies as well.

Some companies will have a difference in their trial period if you purchase from their site, or through Amazon, but Leesa doesn’t.  It’s 100 nights no matter how you purchase.

So if you want to utilize your Prime Subscription feel free to.

Also, Leesa offers a standard 10 year full refund warranty on their mattresses if something is to go wrong.

Who should buy the Leesa Mattress?

  • You like a medium to medium soft mattress – If you prefer more of a firm mattress then this may not be a good option for you, but it will be if you like it more on the soft side. Like we mentioned above the unique combination of the firmer top avena foam layer with the softer memory foam middle layer will conform to most bodies and provide comfort, but the combination does make for a medium soft feel overall.
  • You appreciate quality – Leesa took the time to design a high-quality mattress. From the cover that you won’t be directly laying on, to the quality of the foam inside of the cover this mattress is well made.  None of the labor has been outsourced (made in the USA), and you will absolutely notice the quality after unboxing.
  • You like to give back – Leesa donates a mattress for every 10 of them sold so your money isn’t going towards the profits of an online mattress startup – it’s going towards homeless shelters and those in need. That’s a good feeling knowing you’re helping someone who most likely doesn’t have their own mattress to sleep on in the first place.  In our opinion this speaks a great deal about what kind of company Leesa is.

Leesa Mattress Review Summary

This is a great mattress, and our team thinks this is one of the top picks on the online mattress market.

There are a lot of mattresses to choose from at this point in time, and online mattress startups will continue to popup and disrupt the brick and mortar retail space.  Leesa isn’t the ‘next biggest mattress company’ out there with flashy new lights and features that are groundbreaking.

Instead, they have been around for a few years now and they continue to hold one of the top spots in the space because of their quality products, customer service, and their company backbone that is built on giving back to the company.

You don’t have anything to lose with their 100-night trial period.  If you already own the Leesa mattress, or you’d like to leave us a comment below please do.
