The Ultimate Purple Mattress Review

Purple Mattress Review

We cover quite a bit in our Purple Mattress review.  Make sure you consider WHY you need a new mattress in the first place.  The Purple Mattress isn’t for everyone, but we found it to be an excellent fit for the average sleeper.

What’s the Hype Behind The Purple Mattress?

First of all.  If you haven’t seen this video of the Purple Mattress – this entire review won’t mean as much to you.  Watch the ad (the reason why the Purple bed basically blew up overnight).

Before we get into the Purple Mattress, and all of the details behind it.  Let’s look at why this ad is so engaging.

Goldilocks here basically breaks down 3 different mattress types.  One of them I’m willing to bet you’re probably going to be sleeping on tonight in your bedroom..

  • Hard Mattresses: any sort of mattress that provides enough support for whatever type of position you are in, and keeps your ‘spine aligned’.
  • Soft Mattresses: mattresses that cradle your body, and allow you to sink in to the bed.  Hard mattresses provide support, but they aren’t comfortable enough.  So let’s go to the opposite of the spectrum here.
  • Medium Mattresses: Hard mattresses provide too much support, and soft mattresses provide too little support.  This is a happy medium, right?

Not quite.  Medium mattress doesn’t provide the support where it’s needed, and aren’t soft enough where it’s needed.

Then the Purple Mattress takes away the need to choose between both soft and hard mattresses.

  • No fancy remotes
  • No getting haggled by the mattress salesman
  • No burning a hole in your wallet

These are the prices at the time of posting.  To check the current prices click the links below

  • Length: 79.5” (6 feet 7.5 inches)
  • Width: 59.5” (4 feet 11.5 inches)
  • Height: 9.5 inches

The Purple Bed allows you to get a great night’s rest by being just that.  Cradling your body by being soft, yet still providing the support it needs to keep you aligned.  And most importantly eliminating pressure points (the whole point in the famous Purple Mattress egg test).

We’ll admit – they have some super catchy marketing.  They dive into the problems of other mattress choices on the market and squeeze their way in to the consumers who aren’t currently happy, and they do it for an incredible price we might add..

Most mattresses on the market can be as wallet draining as $5,000 and fall into the soft, hard, or medium bed mattress categories.  Purple (at the time of posting) sells their mattresses for..

The California King is actually 4 inches more narrow than the regular king, but it’s also 4 inches longer.

If you’re really tall this may be the best option for you.

  • Length: 79.5” (6 feet 7.5 inches)
  • Width: 37.5” (3 feet 1.5 inches)
  • Height: 9.5 inches

  • Length: 79.5” (6 feet 7.5 inches)
  • Width: 59.5” (4 feet 11.5 inches)
  • Height: 9.5 inches

  • Length: 79.5” (6 feet 7.5 inches)
  • Width: 59.5” (4 feet 11.5 inches)

  • Length: 83.5” (6 feet 11.5 inches)
  • Width: 71.5” (5 feet 11.5 inches)
  • Height: 9.5”

These aren’t a bad price compared to some of the other mattresses on the market.

There is a trend happening here.  Lots of online mattress companies are popping up left and right and appeal to consumers wallets and needs.

Purple Mattress Features

Let’s look at some of the value props that the Purple Mattress has behind it..

  • Sleeps Cool

Sleeping on a hot mattress that makes you sweat?  We know it sucks the sleep out of you.  We’ve been there.  The Purple Mattress has a 2-inch top layer of hyper elastic polymer.  We’ll break down the layers to the mattress below, but this is the reason why the mattress is able to stay so cool.

  • Great Air Flow

With a memory foam type mattress, there isn’t much air flow to keep the mattress cool, but with the Hyper-Elastic Polymer column grid it allows air to flow and escape.  This also prevents moisture trapping (you know…like a sweaty body print on an old mattress?  Gross).  It sleeps cooler than most memory foam, latex, and other technologies.

  • Pressure Releasing Comfort

Like we mentioned above – The Purple Mattress has a perfect combination of soft and hard.  Soft enough to cradle your body and relieve pressure points while remaining hard enough in areas to provide enough support for spine alignment.

  • Virtually No Motion Transfer

The hyper elastic polymer grid is supportive, but gives way to a specific amount of weight – which makes it a combo of both soft and hard.  This creates virtually no motion transfer so your partner can’t feel you getting in and out of bed.

Other mattresses have this benefit as well, but the advantage you have here with the Purple Mattress is that you get the increase air flow with the column grid rather than a memory foam mattress.  Memory foam mattresses are typically the kind that promotes no motion transfer.

  • Hypoallergenic & Non-Toxic

The hyper elastic polymer top layer is completely recyclable and is made of food grade material.

It’s completely hypoallergenic and antimicrobial too.

How Soft or Firm Is The Purple Mattress?

The layers are covered below, but that’s more about the construction.  You probably want to know how soft or firm this mattress is.

We scoured reviews and slept on the Purple Mattress for 15 days or so before deciding on just how firm or soft this mattress is.

Here is our SleepRated firmness scale:

Some people seem to think that this is the bed that will make you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud.  That’s not the case here.

As we already mentioned – you don’t want a bed that feels like a cloud because it doesn’t provide enough support, and you don’t want to firm of a bed because it doesn’t provide enough comfort.

The Purple Bed Pros & Cons List

It’s important to consider your own situation before buying ANY mattress (purple or not).  Here’s what we found in our testing and research of the purple mattress.  It was important that we get a general concensus of how everyone felt.

For the most part the reviews are positive – but the Purple Mattress isn’t for specific types of sleepers.

  • Great value compared to other mattresses on the market today.
  • Sleeps cooler than most memory foam mattresses (it’s temperature neutral)
  • Right amount of support while still being comfortable.
  • Great for back pain or problem pressure points that need relief.
  • Great for dual opinions (example: Partner likes soft bed, and you like more firm).
  • No controllers needed to find the right feel.
  • 10 year warranty is exceptional
  • 100 night trial period
  • Not ideal for people under 130 pounds. If you don’t weigh enough the SmartGrid won’t give in and do it’s job – making this a more firm bed than expected.
  • If you like to be warm, or you live in a cold climate area this may not be for you.
  • If you weigh over 300 pounds this bed may not be for you. There isn’t a weight limit that is listed on Purple’s site but they do say that over 300 pounds could alter the Purple’s comfort abilities over time (at least faster than someone who weighs less than that).
  • Replacing that 12 inch mattress? This one is only 9.5” so account for nightstand heights etc.

Purple Mattress Layers

What makes the Purple Mattress so unique compared to others you may have slept on / may own is the top hyper-elastic polymer layer.  Their Smart Grid system allows it to be a firm & soft bed at the same time.

We know.  It’s confusing.  Read more below.

The entire Purple Bed is broken into 3 layers:

  • Top:  2 inches of hyper-elastic polymer
  • Middle:  3.5 inches of polyurethane foam (1.8 lb)
  • Bottom:  4 inches of polyurethane foam (2.0 lb)

The purple mattress cover is made up a blend of different fabrics..

  • Viscose
  • Polyester
  • Polyester-Lycra

The blend of these 3 fabrics make for a very soft, and breathable mattress cover.  The mattress stays completely cool because of the top layer, so a cover that promotes air flow to this is important.

The 2-inch top layer is made from Hyper-Elastic Polymer.  This is what makes the Purple Mattress so unique compared to the rest of the mattresses on the market. This column grid is Purple’s Smart Grid.

The part we mentioned earlier that collapses under a certain amount of weight – yet still provides enough support for the smaller parts of your body like your limbs.

Your mid-section, or torso will be where most of your body weight is so the Smart Grid may collapse underneath that weight – while the Smart Grid may hold up underneath the weight of your arms, or lower part of your legs.

This 3.5 inch layer provides support to the top Smart Grid layer.  It’s made of 1.8lb polyurethane foam.

This 4 inch layer is 2 lb polyurethane foam so it has less ‘give’ to it than the middle layer, and really allows the Purple Bed to be a good height.  In total with all 3 layers this mattress is 9.5” in height.  Slightly shorter than your average 12-inch mattress, but not a huge deal.  Really this all depends on how tall your box spring or bed frame is to determine just how high it will be.

So… let’s address the elephant in the room that you may have come across from other Purple Mattress Reviews, and research online.

What Is The Purple Mattress Powder??

If you haven’t already heard of this – don’t worry.  We’ll give you the rundown.  There are a lot of allegations that have been made around the powder that sits at the bottom of the Purple Mattress Smart Grid.  People have made claims that it is unsafe and that they want Purple to address this.

Some claimed that the white powder could potentially be..

  • Toxic
  • Could cause skin reactions
  • Non-Hypoallergenic
  • Could cause respiratory issues

Was there any scientific data behind these claims?

I understand people’s concerns.  What’s that white powder? Is it safe?  Purple never mentioned this on their site?

In May, Purple Mattress published a specific toxicology report behind the white powder that lines the inside of the Smart Grid.  It was a study conducted by the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health.

I read the whole thing so I’ll summarize.

If you want to skip this then scroll a little further to our recap of the Purple Mattress Review.

What is the white powder for?

The Purple Mattress is exclusively sold online.  If you’re not already familiar with their business model they actually ship it right to your door.

It looks like this all rolled up.

Goldilocks not included..

The only reason for the white powder beneath the Purple Smart Grid is to assist with unrolling the mattress.

Hyper-Elastic Polymer has a tacky feel to it once it’s been manufactured – so when it’s rolled up it tends to stick to itself.

The white powder is a lubricant only, and doesn’t serve any other purpose to the mattress.

One of the main concerns that consumers had was breathing this white powder in..

Like we just mentioned above the Smart Grid promotes air flow, and the cover is highly breathable too.  Combining that with weight once you lay down on the mattress can cause the white powder to come up in miniscule (you won’t notice) amounts through the cover.

You shouldn’t be concerned though.  The white powder is Polyethylene Copolymer.

What else is Polyethylene Co-polymer used in?

Polyethylene Copolymer is used in a wide variety of consumer and medical products – which is why you shouldn’t worry about the white powder beneath the Smart Grid.

You can find it in things like..

  • Water Bottles
  • Food Packaging
  • Toys
  • Consumer Containers of Various Types
  • Cosmetics
  • Chewing Gum

Polyethylene is the most common form of plastic in the world.  So you’re already exposed to amounts of it on a daily basis – unless you live underneath a rock on a remote island.
